Motorcycle Tour through the Land of Genghis Khan

Day 1: Arrival

Arrive at Chinggis Khaan International Airport. Meet your local guide and transfer to the hotel. If time allows, visit the garage to get acquainted with the motorcycles. Safety briefing and test ride. Welcome dinner at a central restaurant. Overnight in a hotel (D).

Day 2: Elsen Tasarkhai sand dunes

Leave Ulaanbaatar on a paved road, then ride countryside dirt tracks to become familiar with the terrain. Open land, wheat fields and valleys bordered by rocky outcrops form the landscape. Packed lunch en route. Camp at Elsen Tasarkhai sand dunes, 280 km west of Ulaanbaatar (B, L, D).

Day 3: Tsenkher hot springs

Ride approximately 180 km northwest past the ancient capital Karakorum. A possible stop is Erdene Zuu, the first Buddhist monastery. Continue to Tsenkher hot springs. About half the route is paved and half follows dirt tracks through rolling hills. See cattle, yak and sheep herds tended here for centuries. Cross the river toward evening. Overnight in tents (B, L, D).

Day 4: Lake Terkhiin Tsagaan Nuur

Ride approximately 200 km through mountains and narrow valleys. Cross the Chuluut River and stop at its deep gorge, one of the journey's scenic highlights. Reach the Khorgo volcano area in the afternoon, with an opportunity to climb the crater. Stay in a traditional ger camp. These domed felt dwellings are an ingenious invention of Mongolian herders, adapted to the country's harsh conditions (B, L, D).

Day 5: Erdenemandal

Ride 150 km east on dirt tracks through hilly terrain. Weather and rainfall may create challenging sections, including a river crossing. There are opportunities to visit local herders and enjoy their traditional hospitality. Overnight in tents (B, L, D).

Day 6: Lake Ugii

Another day on dirt roads, with open valleys and gentler mountains. Cross sandy sections and the small Khanui River. After 160 km, reach Lake Ugii in Central Mongolia. Boating and fishing are possible. Overnight in a traditional ger camp (B, L, D).

Day 7: Ulaanbaatar

Ride partly on dirt tracks, reaching paved roads near the end of the day. Riders comfortable on dirt can spend most of the day off pavement. Transfer to the hotel, dinner and overnight (B, L, D).

Detailed itinerary: Land of Genghis Khan route

Five-day itinerary through the Land of Genghis Khan.

Day 1: Arrival

Arrive at Chinggis Khaan International Airport, meet the local guide and transfer to the hotel. If time permits, visit the garage for motorcycle familiarization, safety training and a test ride. Welcome dinner in a central restaurant. Overnight in a hotel (D).

Day 2: Ulaanbaatar to Mungun Morit

Ride a few kilometers on paved roads, then spend the rest of the day on dirt roads. Cross a rocky mountain and three small rivers. Packed lunch en route. Camp near Mungun Morit, 143 km northeast of Ulaanbaatar. Mungun Morit is a gateway to Ikh Khorig, where Genghis Khan is believed to be buried. Although disputed, many believe his tomb lies on Burkhan Khaldun Mountain (B, L, D).

Day 3: Avarga Toson

Ride 190 km east to Avarga Toson, known for mineral-rich mud springs and an ancient settlement from Genghis Khan's time. The Secret History of the Mongols, an account of his family, is said to have been written here. The route follows muddy tracks with obstacles and river crossings. Overnight in tents (B, L, D).

Day 4: Khar Zurkhnii Khukh Lake

Ride north to another historic site, Khar Zurkhnii Khukh Lake, where Temujin is said to have been proclaimed ruler of the united Mongolian tribes in 1189 and given the title Genghis Khan. Ride approximately 127 km, mainly through sandy terrain. Overnight in tents.

Day 5: Ulaanbaatar

Ride 170 km to Ulaanbaatar. Free afternoon to explore the city independently. Farewell dinner and overnight.
